Microcurrent Electrical Therapy (MET) and Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation (CES):  Alpha-Stim® Microcurrent is based on the concept that the biophysics underlying the body's biochemistry also plays a role in regulating all of life's processes.  It is the contemporary theories of Bjorn Nordenstrom, MD, Robert O. Becker MD, Candace Pert, PhD, and Nobel Prize winners Dr. Erwin Neher and Dr. Bert Sakmann that support this specific form of electromedicine.

 

            Using physics, mathematics, chemistry, physiology and immunology, Dr. Bjorn Nordenstrom, through his endless experimentation, introduced the theory of Biologically Closed Electrical Circuits (BCEC).  This system involves the co-transport of ions and electrons that form continuous electric currents and participate in maintaining equilibrium and healing processes in living organisms.  These BCEC-Systems occur at the cellular and subcellular levels involving the flow of ions in membrane channels often resulting in a transfer of electrons.

 

After studying regeneration in natural regenerates such as salamanders for 30+ years, orthopedist Robert O. Becker, MD created an exogenous “current of injury” (COI), which resulted in limb regeneration in frogs and partial regeneration in rats.  His studies have shown that bodies exhibit a positive polarity along the central axis, and a negative polarity in peripheral structures.  He also has demonstrated that this polarity is reversed in anesthesia and following an injury that creates a positive potential at the trauma site.  He believes that this reversal of polarity generates a microcurrent of injury that is conducted through Schwann and glial cell sheaths surrounding neurons, which act to initiate repair and regenerative processes. 

 

The prolonged electrical positive charge at the site of nerve damage and with spinal shock ceases tissue regeneration.  Replacing that polarity with a growth-stimulating biphasic one via an electrode is a solution to regulating growth and healing.

 

FDA approved MET and CES has over 30 years of scientifically based research and publications including over 126 human and 29 published animal studies.  The results are long lasting and cumulative while side effects are rare, mild, and self-limiting.  MET uses a biocompatible (biphasic) waveform.  It is known to control pain and induce healing by increasing the amount of growth factor receptors and ATP production, the optimal electrostimulation for that being 500 microamperes.  Inflammation attracts electricity and MET augments endogenous flow.   

 

            CES is the application of low level current, usually less than 1mA, applied across the head for medical or psychological conditions, or just as an aid in relaxation.  CES has the capacity to normalize the overall firing pattern of the brain to bring it back into homeostasis.  It is generally believed that the effects are primarily mediated through a direct action on the brain at the limbic system, hypothalamus, and/or the reticular activating system. 

 

            These forms of pain, anxiety, and healing modalities are ideal for animals because they are effective below sensation and are easy to administer, both in the clinic and at home.

 

Applications for Alpha-Stim® include:

 

·     Used perioperatively it can reduce the anesthetics required by approximately one-third and establish a better level of post-operative analgesia and shortened recovery phase.

·     Chronic pain – arthritis, DJD, dysplasia

·     Neurological Cases – Paresis, paralysis, disc disease

·     Non-union fractures

·     Behavior cases – pain, fear, anxiety
